They are mainly used for the maintenance of forest estates. They carry out this task the only way they know how: by eating. By keeping in check the fast growth of the undergrowth in these Mediterranean forests, they also help to reduce the risk of forest fires starting or spreading.
The Donkeys of Les Gavarres live in forest enclosures in the ancient parish of Romanyà de la Selva, today a hamlet in the municipality of Santa Cristina d’Aro. The area is well known for its vestiges of prehistoric life, the use of forest resources and the Church of Sant Martí, as well as its close relationship with the great Catalan writer Mercè Rodoreda. Romanyà can be reached by road from Calonge, Llagostera or Santa Cristina d’Aro.
El Roquetal is the forest shelter where we stop to rest and eat on the Verneda and Puig d’Arques routes. Located on a rocky plain amid cork oak groves, it offers views of the Llagostera plains, enjoying all-day sun. The shelter was originally built in 1797 and was restored in 2002, conserving the forest house character kept alive over centuries of forestry. In addition to having a well-earned rest, trekkers get the chance to enjoy the shelter itself and its surroundings.
